There are several alleged benefits of fenugreek. When taken by mouth, the supplement is claimed to be useful for appetite loss, diabetes, and high cholesterol. When applied to the skin, fenugreek may be beneficial for treating eczema, inflammation, and muscle pain. However, it is important to know that there is not enough scientific evidence to show that fenugreek is indeed effective for these uses.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an herb that has been used medicinally since ancient times. In modern use, probably the most common claim for fenugreek is that it can stimulate breast milk production in women. In addition, when taken by mouth, fenugreek is often claimed to be useful for the following conditions:
* Diabetes
* High cholesterol or high triglycerides
* Appetite loss
* Indigestion or heartburn
* Constipation
* Impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction or ED)
* Baldness.
When applied to the skin instead, fenugreek is sometimes used to treat the following conditions:
* Muscle pain
* Inflammation
* Gout
* Wounds or skin ulcers
* Eczema.
There is not enough scientific evidence to recommend fenugreek for any of these uses (see Does Fenugreek Work? for more information). There is early (and sometimes contradictory) research that suggests that fenugreek may have some benefit for lowering blood sugar in people with diabetes or for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides. When used to lower blood sugar, it is taken with a meal to decrease the blood sugar rise that occurs after the meal.
How Does Fenugreek Work?
Fenugreek contains sotolon, trigonelline, and 4-hydroxyisoleucine, compounds that are thought to be the active components of it. 4-hydroxyisoleucine may stimulate the secretion of insulin, which is why fenugreek may theoretically lower blood sugar. The seeds also contain fiber and pectin, a complex carbohydrate, both of which may slow down the digestive tract, which can also help lower blood sugar.
Fenugreek may also contain "blood-thinning" compounds known as coumarins, but it is not known if these compounds are present in high enough quantities to actually make a difference in humans. Fenugreek may also stimulate the uterus, heart, and intestines.
It is not known how (or even if) fenugreek might work to stimulate breast milk production.
Fenugreek Use in Children
Fenugreek is probably safe for children when consumed in small amounts, such as in some foods. It is not known if it is safe in higher amounts. There has been one case of loss of consciousness in a child who consumed fenugreek tea.
